Pole Barn Design
When you start looking into pole barn design, you note rather quickly that they aren’t many limitations on what you can do.
A major consideration of pole barn design is the posts themselves. They limit how far you can let windows go. This doesn’t matter for uses (it’s mostly a consideration when building a house) but may a worry when you are thinking about what you can do with the pole barn. The posts do give the house the ability to change shape quickly if needed, as the posts provide a way to lengthen in a direction, and a way to anchor new additions.
Basements are another consideration of pole barn design. They need to be planned for, especially as they add complications to the building process, both in terms of digging the hole before construction (as the hole needs to be stable before the pole barn can be built), and covering it during it construction (so that it can be used and so that the floor won’t cave in). Most pole barns don’t have basements, but a number of house barns do; the extra storage is a consideration and appreciated.
When it comes to pole barn design, lofts are an issue. Although a pole barn can support a loft, it usually isn’t done. Some builders fear the added weight on the roof, but that’s not a major worry as long as it’s properly shored up. However, most builders just don’t add a second story due to the added complication. A second-story can add a nice touch, and more living space. It can also create some interesting spaces, as you can design them as you would like.
And then there are the details. When it comes to pole barn design there are number of details you can add, but they need to be determined by the eventual use of the pole barn. Insulation and utilities can be added for a house, and need to be allowed for in the planning. Stalls can be added for animals. Shelving is a nice touch, and a highly useful one.
Don’t forget to allow for local laws and regulations. When you start designing your pole barn, make sure that you at least have a passing knowledge of what is acceptable and not acceptable in the local area, and allow for that during pole barn design. Also, make sure to confer with local experts, especially if you are building a home. A very real possibility is that you build the pole barn, and then find out that you forgot some minor rule that requires rebuilding the entire thing from the ground up. The good news: Well, pole barns are less expensive than regular barns. The bad news: It can be a major inconvenience.
There are a lot of considerations when you start thinking about pole barn design. How would you design your pole barn?
