Should You Build A Pole Barn?

A pole barn brings with it several advantages. Its cheap, easy to build, and easy to maintain. Because of this, they are popular on small farms, which usually don’t have a lot of extra money to spend and need to economize. Also, if built well, they can last a while. But…they aren’t for everyone. So how do you determine if you should build a pole barn?

First, check your balance. As pole barns only require a third of the material of regular barns, and also takes less labor, they are cheaper than regular barns. If you end up having to build a pole barn, then you end up saving some money compared to the cost involved with building a normal barn.

You also need to know what you are going to use it for build a pole barn. Whereas a normal barn is good for general use, a pole barn is best for a specific use. A pole farm is best used for storage or as a way station (a building used for caching stuff well away from the home base). If you find yourself on the back parts of your property a lot, the pole barn may do you well. On the other hand, if you are looking for a place to put a large number of animals, a pole barn may do you well as it can be added on to and its one-story nature is an advantage in this case.

Another consideration is whether or not the intrinsic limitations of a pole barn matter before you build a pole barn. Pole barns don’t usually have a second story, at least, nothing like a standard barn’s second story, and so that may be a consideration. The good news is that pole barn can survive anything (including tornadoes, if built well), so that the size may not be as big an issue as it would appear.

An interesting issue to consider before you build a pole barn is if you need the space. As you can build them easily, and it doesn’t take that much material to make one, they are great when you need some extra space in a hurry. As they can be built to handle anything from feed to animal to general storage, pole barns are nice when you need the extra storage space.

A last consideration is if you can people to help you build it. A barn requires a large amount of labor to raise it; it takes a village a raise barn in a day. However, a pole barn can be raised in a day with just a few people. Throw in a barbecue, and you should be able to make an afternoon.

When you build a pole barn, there are some considerations to debate. But not for long.
